Born 1934, Paris, France. Died 2002, Jean-Pierre Vasarely (son of Victor Vasarely), known as Yvaral.

French maker of optical/kinetic reliefs and painter. Jean-Pierre Vasarely, known as Yvaral, born in Paris. Studied graphic art and publicity at the Ecole des Arts Appliqu-23s in Paris. First experimented with geometrical abstract art in 1954 and made his first works with movement 1955. Co-founder with Le Parc, Morellet, Sobrino and others of the Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel 1960.

Attempted to create a visual language based on simple codifiable and programmed elements and also (in his reliefs) to use moir-23 effects, optical acceleration, etc. to introduce notions of space and time usually through the displacement of the spectator. First one-man exhibition at the Howard Wise Gallery, New York, 1966. From c.1968 made many paintings and screenprints with vigorous colour interactions and geometrical compositions suggesting movement, projection, recession, etc. His works include a number of multiples.

  • 1944 - To 1949: Educated at the Lycee Lakanal a Sceaux.
  • 1950 - To 1953: Studies graphic art and publicity at the Ecole des Arts Appliques in Paris.
  • 1954 - First experiments with geometric abstract art.
  • 1955 - Creates his first kinetic works.
  • 1960 - Co-founds the Group de Recherche d"Art Visuel with Julio Le Parc, Francois Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Horacio Garcia Rossi and Joel Stein.
  • 1963 - Wins the Gold Medal at the 5th Biennale in San Marino.
  • 1966 - Begins work on the "Structured Horizons" series.
  • 1967 - Completes an architectural project for the French Pavilion at the World Expo, Montreal, Canada in collaboration with Victor Vasarely.
  • 1969 - Begins work on the "Cubic Structures" series. Creates a kinetic set design for the Ballet Kraanerg at the National Art Center, Ottawa, Canada.
  • 1970 - Completes a design for the facade of the new RTL building, Paris, in collaboration with Victor Vasarely.
  • 1971 - Wins Gold Mdeal at the Triennale in New Delhi and at the Triennale in Alexandria.
  • 1972 - Designs the Renault logo with GRAV, which is still in use today.
  • 1975 - Introduces digital images into his works, creating numerical portraits of, among others, Salvador Dali and Marilyn Monroe as well as monuments such as the Statue of Liberty.
  • 1986 - Designs a poster for the UNESCO"s 40th Anniversary celebrations in Bangkok, Thailand, which is widely disseminated throughout the UNESCO network.
  • 1996 - Designs a poster for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, USA.
  • 2002 - Yvaral passes away.
